Celebrating the Rebirth of Gurusina

In the heart of Ngada, Flores, lies the enchanting Gurusina traditional village, a place shrouded in cultural richness and tradition. It is here that the village has made its triumphant comeback from the ashes, and it's a story that needs to be told.

A Blaze That Shook the Village

Six years ago, on August 13, 2018, disaster struck the Gurusina traditional village. A devastating fire consumed 27 out of 33 traditional houses, causing an estimated loss of Rp 5.4 billion*. This was not just a financial loss but also a loss of cultural heritage, as these houses were symbolic of the villagers' traditions and way of life.

Rising from the Ashes

The people of Gurusina were not to be defeated. After years of dedication and hard work, the village celebrated the re-building of 27 traditional houses in a two-day celebration known as "Kasa'o." This event marks a significant turning point in the history of Gurusina.

Kasa'o Celebration: A Spectacle of Tradition

The Kasa'o celebration is a vibrant and culturally rich festival that involves various traditional rituals and festivities. One of the highlights of this celebration is the traditional dance, Ja'i. The dance is a powerful expression of the villagers' unity and resilience, an embodiment of their unwavering spirit.

The Sacrifice of 27 Buffalos and Hundreds of Pigs

In a grand display of gratitude and respect, the villagers performed a solemn ceremony by sacrificing 27 buffalos and hundreds of pigs. These sacrifices are a testament to the villagers' commitment to their cultural heritage and their hope for a prosperous future.

Litter of Palm Wine to Feed All Guests

To share their joy and express their gratitude, the villagers generously provided palm wine to all their guests. This traditional beverage is a symbol of hospitality and a vital part of Ngadan culture. It reflects the warmth and welcoming nature of the people of Gurusina.

History in the making

Gurusina's resurgence and the Kasa'o celebration are testaments to the strength of a community bonded by culture and tradition.

This is a celebration of life, culture, and a triumphant return. This is a journey worth taking, a story worth sharing.
